Forward Together Consulting are delighted that so far over 100 candidates from the Criminal Justice Sector have achieved Unit 5019, CMI Award in Management Coaching and Mentoring. Eighty eight of these have been through programmes run by Forward Together and subsidised with funding from Skills for Justice. This is the Sector Skills Council for Fire and Rescue and Criminal Justice workers.

An Awards Ceremony sponsored by the CMI and Skills for Justice was held in Birmingham and well attended by candidates who had completed the Action Learning Programme. Forward Together staged a morning workshop on the Way Forward, as part of the day’s events.

We are pleased to continue our collaboration with Skills for Justice especially as it is part of the ongoing programmes that they fund for women under a national sector pathways initiative. It will run in tandem with programmes that we are organising for other public sector clients. Further programmes for the achievement of Unit 5016, CMI Award in Management Coaching and Mentoring, will also be taking place.

In conjunction with the Award programmes, Forward Together Consulting is well underway with programmes leading to the CMI Level 5 Certificate and Diploma in Management Coaching and Mentoring. These are aimed at managers who wish to develop their management coaching as well as mentoring skills and practices. They focus on supporting managers to develop the link between coaching, mentoring and the achievement of business goals.

Tony Osborne was the first to complete his assignment and meet the assessment criteria for the Chartered Management Institute Unit on Management of Action Learning. He and 23 women from the Criminal Justice sector have achieved the Level 5 Award in Management Coaching and Mentoring at an Approvals Panel on 2nd September 2009.

As Hannah Riley from Hertfordshire Police said on receiving the good news “Thank you for the good news, and thanks again for a really interesting time on the course! We are currently planning how to take action learning forward in the organisation and are looking at new managers and also employee engagement as key starting points.”

Kay Weeks said “Thanks Steve – I am really pleased to have passed. We have plans in place for our first sets to start….one to coincide with employee engagement survey. When results go out to team leaders we are going to promote ALS & invite people to join a set that will focus on managers bringing issues involving demodulated, disengaged staff to the sessions to work through. The other will be for new managers. I keep promoting the course to others because it was brilliant – hope you get some more from Hertfordshire on the courses.”

Of those candidates achieving the Award, 18 have been through the programme subsidised by funding from Skills for Justice which is the Sector Skills Council for the Fire and Rescue Service and Criminal Justice workers.

Over the last 3 years, one of our Directors has worked with two senior managers both as an executive coach and team coach to enable them to deal with change and work effectively together in a highly supportive but also challenging environment. We believe there are two kinds of goals the leader needs to work on: business goals – getting external results; and personal goals – what the leader has to do differently in how he/she conduct themselves in order to get the business results. One of the senior managers, an Assistant Director, said “Stephen was totally client focused, remained confidential and supported me through major transformational change. His work with my newly formed team enabled me to consider different management approaches with different individuals. Together we worked on my leadership, my networking and my influencing – all of which give me confidence to do my job to the best of my ability. I would recommend Stephen as someone with total integrity, hugely reliable and someone I would turn to for personal and professional advice.”

One of our Directors worked as Assistant to the Chief Executive and Interim Head of Secretariat for a nine month period prior to and post the inception of the Commission in April 2009. This included leading the development and implementation of corporate governance and administrative systems and processes during a major transformational change programme. Key skills in listening, negotiating, challenging and inspiring people both from the legacy organisations and the Chairman, CEO and their new teams were instrumental to success especially in determining the appropriate demarcation between executive and non executive functions. As the CEO said “Helen, thank you so much for your unswerving support, wise counsel, energy and determination! I literally don’t know what we would have done without you”
